Perfect Tigers, Cougars head into title games
Both of college
football's remaining unbeaten teams will be in action this week in
conference championships, but neither result should have an impact
on who gets into the BCS Championship Game. 12-0 LSU takes on
Georgia in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday afternoon (4:00pm
ET), while 12-0 Houston will host Southern Miss for the Conference
USA crown earlier in the day (12:00pm ET).
LSU (9-3 against the spread) sits atop the BCS rankings once again
heading into this weekend, and the school right behind them on that
list Alabama is one they beat already this season. That means
even if the Tigers are upset by 10-2 Georgia (8-4 ATS) at the
Georgia Dome in the SEC title game on Saturday they're still going
to get invited to play in the BCS Championship Game in January.
The Tigers warmed up for this contest with a 41-17 throttling of
Arkansas over the weekend, putting an end to the Razorbacks' brief
flirtation with a bid to the BCS Championship Game. LSU quarterback
Jordan Jefferson completed 18 of 29 pass attempts for 208 yards for
his team in that win, with one touchdown and one interception. Kenny
Hillard paced the ground game with a score and 102 yards.
LSU beat Georgia 20-13 on the road when the schools last met in
October 2009, winning as a 3.5-point underdog in that UNDER result.
The Tigers will be double-digit favorites on the Oddsmaker betting
board as they look for their 13th victory.
The Cougars (10-2 ATS) are at No. 6 in the current BCS rankings, but
no win over 10-2 Southern Miss (7-5 ATS) in the Conference USA
Championship Game on Saturday is going to be impressive enough to
vault them into the top two on the list.
Houston padded their resume with an easy 48-16 win over Tulsa last
time out, with quarterback Case Keenum going 33 of 46 for 457 yards
passing with five touchdowns and no interceptions. Patrick Edwards
had four touchdown receptions in that contest, hauling in eight
balls in total for 181 yards in the blowout victory.
Southern Miss rolled over Memphis 44-7 on the weekend, climbing up
to No. 24 in the BCS rankings in the process. When the Golden Eagles
met the Cougars last season they won 59-41 at home as a 3.5-point
favorite in an easy OVER result.
There are two other conference championship games on the college
football schedule for Saturday, with Virginia Tech vs. Clemson at
Bank of America Stadium in the ACC title game (8:00pm ET), and
Wisconsin vs. Michigan State at Lucas Oil Stadium for the Big Ten
crown (8:00pm ET). As well, Oklahoma State hosts Oklahoma on
Saturday (8:00pm ET) in what is the de facto Big 12 championship
game, with the winner claiming first place in that conference for
the season.
On Friday night Oregon plays host to UCLA in the Pac-12 Championship
Game (8:00pm ET), while it's Ohio vs. Northern Illinois in the MAC
Championship Game (8:00pm ET) at Ford Field. Head over to the
Oddsmaker college football betting board for all the lines for this
weekend's championship matchups on the gridiron.
