LSU, Oklahoma State on collision course?
The top two teams in the
updated BCS rankings will look to remain on track for a meeting in
the title game in January as they hit the field this week; 10-0 and
No. 1 LSU is on the road at 2-8 Mississippi on Saturday (7:00pm ET),
while 10-0 and No. 2 Oklahoma State will play on Friday night at 5-4
Iowa State (8:00pm ET).
And 10-0 Houston? The only other undefeated team left in the top
tier of college football is still back at No. 11 in the BCS rankings
as they prepare for a game at home against 6-4 Southern Methodist on
Saturday (3:30pm ET).
Both Stanford and Boise State fell out of the ranks of the
undefeated over the weekend, joining the likes of Alabama, Oregon,
and Oklahoma in the one-loss club. That basically puts an end to the
national title chances of both of those schools unless something
crazy happens over the next few weeks of the schedule.
Alabama, Oregon, and Oklahoma sit at No. 3, 4, and 5 in this week's
BCS rankings, with each poised to overtake LSU and/or Oklahoma State
in that list if things go their way down the stretch. The 9-1
Crimson Tide host Georgia Southern this weekend in what should
essentially be a bye week for them, while 9-1 Oregon hosts 8-2
Southern Cal in a Pac-12 clash, and 8-1 Oklahoma plays at 6-3
Baylor.
9-1 Stanford, down to No. 9 in the BCS rankings, is at home against
6-4 California on Saturday after getting beaten 53-30 in their own
stadium by Oregon over the weekend. 8-1 Boise State, now at No. 10
in the BCS rankings, will try to bounce back from a devastating
36-35 home loss to TCU last time out when they play on the road
against 6-3 San Diego State on Saturday night.
However, it's LSU and Oklahoma State that remain in the driver's
seat for the two national title game berths; if they keep their
records spotless into bowl season they'll be meeting for all the
marbles in the BCS National Championship Game.
The Tigers didn't have any problem getting to 10-0 on the season
over the weekend, winning a gift game against Western Kentucky by a
score of 42-9 at home. Jordan Jefferson saw the bulk of the action
at QB for LSU in that contest, going 8 of 14 for 168 yards passing
with one touchdown strike. Jarrett Lee completed 2 of his 4 attempts
for 15 yards and a score, while Alfred Blue rushed for 119 yards and
two touchdowns; LSU is now 7-3 against the spread this season.
Oklahoma State beat up on Texas Tech 66-6 on the road no less in
their Week 11 matchup over the weekend, putting them at 8-2 against
the spread this year. Joseph Randle paced the Cowboys' attack with
three touchdown runs in that game, while Brandon Weeden threw for
423 yards and five touchdowns. Josh Stewart and Justin Blackmon each
had two catches in the end zone in that victory.
After playing Mississippi, LSU will close out their regular-season
schedule at home against BCS No. 6 Arkansas on November 25. Oklahoma
State plays host to rival Oklahoma in their final regular-season
matchup on December 3 after a bye week.
