Tigers, Crimson Tide top first BCS standings
LSU will be looking to
maintain its top spot in the BCS standings on Saturday afternoon as
they play host to another ranked SEC school, Auburn (3:30pm ET).
The first BCS standings of the season were released on Sunday, and
LSU has a slim lead on Alabama for first place on that list. The
Tigers and Crimson Tide meet on November 5 in Alabama in a matchup
that could decide both of their seasons.
Before that, though, 7-0 LSU (-23) will have to get past Auburn. LSU
cruised past Tennessee 38-7 on the road over the weekend, with
quarterback Jarrett Lee going an efficient 13-of-17 for 138 yards
through the air with three touchdown strikes and no interceptions.
Rueben Randle, Russell Shepard, and Spencer Ware all caught TD
passes for LSU in that game, and Ware and Jordan Jefferson had TD
runs.
Auburn is coming off a win as well they beat Florida 17-6 at home
over the weekend and their 5-2 record in the tough SEC has them at
No. 20 in the opening BCS standings. Barrett Trotter connected with
DeAngelo Benton on a TD pass in that win over the Gators, while
Onterio McCalebb rushed for a touchdown.
Alabama (-29) treads water this week with their own matchup with
Tennessee before they got their shot at LSU. The Crimson Tide
improved to 7-0 on the season with a 52-7 road rout of Mississippi
over the weekend, as Trent Richardson ran for 183 yards and four
touchdowns, and Jalston Fowler rushed for 125 yards and a pair of
scores. QB AJ McCarron threw for 224 yards and one touchdown in that
victory.
While those SEC schools sit in the top two spots in the BCS
standings, a pair of Big 12 teams Oklahoma and Oklahoma State
hold down positions No. 3 and No. 4 this week on that list. The 6-0
Sooners and 6-0 Cowboys will meet during the regular season as well,
but that matchup isn't going to take place until December 3.
This Saturday Oklahoma (-28) is a home against Texas Tech, while
Oklahoma State (-7.5) is on the road against Missouri. The Sooners
had the easier time over the weekend, winning 47-17 at Kansas with
Landry Jones throwing for 363 yards with three touchdowns and one
interception. Dominique Whaley rushed for 165 yards and a touchdown
in that contest, and Ryan Broyles caught a pair of passes for
scores.
Oklahoma State tangled with Texas in Week 7, pulling out a 38-26
road win behind 140 yards and two touchdowns on the ground from
Jeremy Smith. Brandon Weeden threw for 218 yards with a touchdown
strike for the Cowboys in that win.
So where does that leave 6-0 Boise State? In the No. 5 spot on the
initial BCS standings, and hoping that the SEC and Big 12 schools
beat each other up and let them finally slip into the title game
this season. The Broncos (-32) beat Colorado State 63-13 on the
weekend, and they'll be back at home to face Air Force on Saturday.
