AFC East clash on Monday Night Football

A pair of struggling AFC East teams will hit the field at MetLife Stadium on Monday Night Football as the New York Jets host the Miami Dolphins (8:30pm ET, ESPN).

For the Jets, the 2011 campaign has been a major disappointment so far. New York made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game again last season, bouncing their hated rivals from New England in getting there. Then the Jets began this season with back-to-back victories over the Cowboys and the Jaguars.

Since Week 3, however, it's been all downhill for the Jets, as they were beaten 34-24 in Oakland, 34-17 in Baltimore, and 30-21 in New England to sit at 2-3 straight-up and an ugly 1-4 against the spread through the first five weeks of the season.

And not only does that have New York sitting two games back of the Patriots in the AFC East standings, but they're also trailing the surprising Buffalo Bills by two games thanks to their three-game losing skid. On the Oddsmaker betting board the Jets are third on the AFC East odds list at +900 to come back and win the division title this season; the Patriots lead the way at -350, with the Bills pegged at +300.

Against New England last time out the Jets fell behind 10-0 and never recovered, and quarterback Mark Sanchez only managed to pass for 166 yards although he did connect on TD strikes with Santonio Holmes and Jeremy Kerley. Shonn Greene paced New York's running attack in the loss with 83 yards and a score.

Still, as bad as the Jets have been lately they're still listed as 7-point home favorites (with the OVER/UNDER at 43) for Monday Night Football against a Dolphins team that enters the week at 0-4 both straight up and against the spread.

Miami opened the year with a 38-24 loss to the Patriots in Miami, then lost at home to Houston (23-13), on the road to Cleveland (17-16), and on the road to San Diego (26-16) before mercifully sitting out Week 5 on a bye.

And that Week 4 defeat against the Chargers proved to be extra costly, as starting quarterback Chad Henne was lost for the season with a separated shoulder. That puts QB Matt Moore in charge of Miami's offense going forward; Moore went 17-of-26 for 167 yards passing with no touchdowns and one interception against San Diego, and he has a QB Rating of 73.5 with a TD/INT ratio of 16/18 in his career.

Needless to say, the Dolphins aren't burning up the odds charts at Oddsmaker; they're way back at +15000 to win the AFC East this season. One thing the Dolphins have going for them on Monday, though, are the trends they're 4-1 both straight up and against the spread in their last five games against the Jets.
