Bills, Redskins lead early NFL surprises
The Buffalo Bills and
the Washington Redskins were both pegged for last-place finishes in
their respective divisions this season, but after two weeks both
teams carry perfect 2-0 records. They'll put those spotless marks on
the line in Week 3, with Buffalo hosting New England (Sunday, 1:00pm
ET, CBS) and Washington visiting Dallas (Monday, 8:30pm ET, ESPN).
With the Patriots on deck the Bills' run in the sun is likely coming
to an end on Sunday, but they've still impressed so far this season
by putting up a combined 79 points in wins over Kansas City (41-7)
and Oakland (38-35).
And you can thank Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick for a good chunk of
those points. Fitzpatrick, a preseason candidate to get replaced by
Stanford pivot Andrew Luck next season, threw for 208 yards and four
touchdowns in Week 1 against Kansas City, and then picked up 264
passing yards and three more TD strikes vs. the Raiders over the
weekend. As well, Fitzpatrick has thrown just one interception so
far this year despite sitting with a TD/INT ratio of 51/43 in his
six-year NFL career.
Fred Jackson rushed for 117 yards and two scores for Buffalo against
the Raiders, while Stevie Johnson, David Nelson, and Scott Chandler
had the TD catches.
Still, the Bills will be home underdogs on Sunday against a Patriots
team that's also 2-0 on the season after beating Miami and San Diego
in their first two games. And Tom Brady has thrown seven touchdown
passes and just one interception so far in 2011 as well, although he
does have a bit of a better track record than Fitzpatrick in his
12-year NFL career Brady has a TD/INT ratio of 268/104.
The Redskins were another team that looked like they were headed
down Andrew Luck Road before the season started, with starting QB
duties handed over to Rex Grossman and a year's worth of tough
competition from the NFC East. However, Washington won 38-24 over
the Giants in Week 1 and beat Arizona 22-21 in Week 2, giving them
sole possession of top spot in their division heading into Week 3.
Grossman wasn't that accurate in the team's win over the Cardinals
completing just 25-of-43 pass attempts for 291 yards with a pair of
interceptions but he managed to throw a pair of touchdown strikes,
including a key one in the fourth quarter as the Redskins came back
for the victory. In Week 1 against the Giants Grossman threw for 305
yards and two touchdowns and wasn't intercepted at all.
On Monday night the Redskins will face a favored Cowboys team that
avoided an 0-2 start by slipping past the 49ers 27-24 in San
Francisco over the weekend; Dallas was bounced 27-24 on the road by
the Jets back in Week 1. Cowboys WR Dez Bryant missed the team's
victory in Week 2 because of a quadriceps injury.
